My Customer's Avatar

The Customer

My ideal customer is an individual in the 18-25 year old range with a slight leaning toward men but that's not a major trend. They have access to reliable transportation outside of walking. They live off campus. They are adventuresome and like trying new food and seeing new places. They eat out 2-3 times a week and occasionally go out to the bars. Ideally they would be conscious of money and come from the middle class or  have parents that value hard work.

Other Questions

The avatar has a lot of things in common with me. This is not a coincidence, I based that off of myself and friends who seem to have the same problem I do, as well as, the people I have interviewed that see the same problem.

Bacos

The word I came up with is bacos. It means beer and tacos. For the last two weeks or so I have been using this around friends and at work. The first couple of times I used it people gave me a weird look until I explained it. They then started laughing. After a while people would ask me if I was getting bacos on Tuesday. It was mainly used as a joke but it was still cool when they would use it.

I think I could find a better way to combine the two words but bacos was what came to me. In my opinion there is no other way to eat tacos than with beer so I felt that this was a great opportunity for a portmanteau,

Halfway Reflection

1. What are the behaviors that you have used (or developed) to keep up with the requirements of this course?

I have set aside a couple hours 3 days a week to make sure I have done the assignments and made sure that I know of any future assignments. The online platform makes it easy to get behind, but by keeping track of assignments and allotting time in my schedule has quelled these problems.

2. Talk about a moment or two when you felt like "giving up." What pulled you through? Do you feel like you've developed a tenacious attitude during the past two months? What experience or experiences most contributed to this?

On several assignments, I simply did not feel like completing them because an extra credit assignment(s) mitigated the points I would have lost if I did not do the assignment. The thing that pulled my through this was that I missed a question on an extra credit quiz so I had to do an assignment to not lose part of a point.

I do not really fell as if I have developed a tenacious attitude during the past two months. What has really contributed to this is that I feel a disconnect with the class. Tenacity is developed when doing something you feel passion for. However, when I have yet to meet another student taking this class or really feel passionate about assignments it is hard to build this tenacious attitude. In theory, commenting on blog posts is a great way to help people feel engaged. However, no one is going to be honest or even constructive while commenting on a strangers blog post when they can write fluff sentences for 60 words and receive the same grade. I get that with hundreds, if not thousands of students, and UF online students this is probably the only way to make this class viable. I just wish there was a way to make this class more engaging because after the first few weeks I have lost much of the motivation I came into the class with.

3. What are three tips you would offer next semester's student about (1) fostering the skills that support tenacity and (2) developing the 'tenacious mindset' ?

Tip #1: Find a topic that you are interested in. My topic has been the one thing that has kept me motivated to complete assignments because I enjoy talking to people about my thoughts and I like hearing them be honest and offer critiques to help better my thinking.

Tip #2: Be completely honest in your opinion in commenting on Blog posts. This is a skill that will support tenacity because you will, one, help others develop their ideas and, two, it will help you think on a topic you may never have even considered to be an issue, furthering your experience in the class.

Tip #3: Be completely honest with yourself. It is easy to BS your way through assignments and classes. By being honest with yourself, you will know how much work needs to be done and how much you actually did. This will keep you grounded and motivated to develop the "tenacious mindset" the class attempts to develop.

Reading Reflection No. 1

1. Andrew Carnegie

   A) The Thing that surprised me the most about Andrew Carnegie was that at one point he was the richest man in the world. I never knew this before reading the book and at his time to accomplish such a feat and accumulate the wealth he did is still mind boggling.

   B) I most admired his ability to think and stay several steps ahead of his competition. He constantly found new ways to make money and gain success and connections, while others were living in the past. He learned to beat the system on several occasions. My favorite example of Carnegie staying ahead of the competition was early in his life he was trying to gain funding so he could win a contract to build the Keystone Bridge. He had to gain commitments from other companies to secure business, just so he could begin selling bonds and stock. All of this was before a piece of rail was laid down.

   C) The thing I least admired about Carnegie was that in order to build his empire he, at times, took shortcuts. For example, he would buy and sell shares in companies that he knew did not have enough assets despite their high stock value. He practiced a lot of insider trading early in his career, while not illegal at the time, makes me a little skeptical on some of his profits because he did not take the most honest route to acquire wealth.

   D) Carnegie faced adversity from birth. He was born to very poor parents who had never had much wealth their entire lives. He then immigrated to the United States when he was just 12 years old with his family. The family had to sail across the Atlantic then find a way to get to Allegheny City so they could meet up with relatives, who were also poor. It was a turbulent beginning to his life, however, Carnegie had a positive disposition and was able to overcome the troubles that he faced. I think this is why becoming the richest man in the world is even more impressive.

2. What competencies did you notice that the entrepreneur exhibited?

Carnegie was an excellent speaker and this competency allowed him to both raise funds, when needed, and build connections. Being able to communicate is a skill that most people do not have to his level. There are many pictures in the book of Carnegie walking and talking with important individuals that helped shape where Carnegie ended up in life. Clearly being able to communicate his values and plans was a huge competency for Carnegie. Carnegie was also a great philanthropist. This is another competency that proves a great man. He gave away most of his enormous fortune by the time he died. He helped fund schools, libraries, and determine where education would go in the United States. To keep a focus on the truly important things in life despite such enormous wealth is very noble. Not as important as the other two but Carnegie was also an above-average golfer and played at some of the best clubs in the world.

3. Identify at least one part of the reading that was confusing.

For the most part the book was broken down very neatly. Each of the forty-two chapters were generally short so the information was never too confusing. The first couple chapters were hard to follow though. The book is an biography so the author was talking about his whole family and their family. By not being in the first person it was difficult to follow who everyone was or how important they were in his life. I think there was just too much information about unimportant aspects. The author also included pieces of Carnegie's autobiography. The combination of opinions was hard to follow.

4. If you were able to ask any two questions to the entrepreneur, what would you ask? Why?

   A) The first question I would ask is where did his quest for philanthropy begin? I would ask him this because to give up most of your wealth, you have to have some big, overarching reason for doing so. I would just want to pick his brain about the value he places on education and how his donations helped further education in the United States.

   B) The next question I would ask is how he overcame so much in his early years to end up where he did. I would ask this because poverty and the rich-poor gap is a problem for so many Americans today. Yet, he overcame all of this as an immigrant and then some. I would like to figure out if the time period helped him out or if it was simply his desire to build the Carnegie name.

5. What do you think the entrepreneur's opinion of hard work was? Do you share this opinion?

I think that even though he may have taken a few shortcuts in his life, that he would preach hard work and dedication to your job. I would like to say I share these exact sentiments. I too will cut corners when I can to make my life easier, however, when it comes to getting a job done, I will work relentlessly to accomplish my goals.

Idea Napkin No. 1

1. Me? -

I am highly motivated when I find the right opportunity that piques my interest. I am an excellent communicator and leader and can motivate others to work with me to reach a goal. I have worked in management for a year and have managed up to 45 people. My aspirations with this business are to develop something that can be useful for others. I am not looking to make a huge monetary gain but it would be nice to make a little side money as my first entrepreneurial venture.

2. What am I offering to customers? -

The product I am offering to customers is an app that will aid in deciding where to eat or go to on a night out. It will split up the restaurants and venues by type of food offered (Italian, Mexican, etc.) and "Deal of the Day" to appeal to those who want good food but do not want to pay a lot for a meal out.

3. Who am I offering it to? -

I will focus on individuals in the 18-25 year old age bracket, starting first with students at major universities (UF).

4. Why do they care? -

Many college students eat out several times a week and generally go to the same places because it is what they know. My app will break this cycle and will also help them save money. Chipotle is a great place to go, but maybe there is a cheaper alternative with a shorter line.

5. What are my core competencies? -

I think the thing that will set me apart from other similar services is that I will have the multiple dimensions on choosing. Yelp you can view different types of restaurants and price ranges, however, it does not show deals which are important to college students. It also shows the chain restaurants more regularly than the small, local restaurants.

I think all of these elements fit together really well. My abilities to communicate and lead a team would be ideal to get this venture off the ground initially and keep it going until I exit. The college aged population does not have an app that specifically caters to them and this will allow me to more easily enter the market and gain popularity. They are also some of the most likely people to go out to eat regularly, rather than eat at home.

Elevator Pitch No. 1

Here is the link to my elevator pitch.

My topic is that it is impossible to decide on a restaurant to eat at. I came up with the app "Food for Thought" to break down all of the restaurants in Gainesville by food type or Deal of the Day which would allow you to pick a place based on what kind of food you want or what place had the best deal.

Product Levels

Core (Benefit) - The benefit of this app is that it will show people of more places to eat so they can break the usual cycle and it will also allow college students to be more frugal and eat out for less.

Tangible - The tangible of the app will be the display and how the app is organized. I plan on splitting the app into type of restaurant and deal of the deal. The font and color scheme will also be part of the tangible product level.

Augmented - The augmented level of the app would be to offer a match any other deal that people send in. For this they could email the app maker and they would update the app to show this new deal that someone may have found.

Ways to Introduce the Innovation

Number 1 - The first way would be to tweak the core level and include a map to show what restaurants are in the area, this way people can decide on what to eat based on distance, as well as, the other criteria. Unlike yelp or a similar app this will not show only the businesses that pay the most cash to be represented aka chain restaurants.

Number 2 - I could also introduce the innovation by altering the tangible level. This will be a more user friendly display than yelp. I will keep it simple because this will allow people to clearly see the results instead of scrolling through pages trying to find the place they want or a local restaurant.
